Gideon's 1st Birthday Party!

Gideon had his very first birthday party last weekend!  How is this child 1 years old?!?  I love it.

We threw him the coolest dinosaur party and invited his best baby friends, all his cousins and family members and partied hard!  Gideon was incredibly well loved and spent a good chunk of the party observing everyone from the carrier on Dad.

The party was S.I.M.P.L.E and stress-free.  The most work I did was putting frozen chicken nuggets in the oven and tidying up pre-guest arrival.  I enjoyed the party with everyone else and I think the whole thing was a hit.

Gideon's smash cake was made to match a shirt from Etsy my mom bought him.  And as you can see I utilized the amazing chalkboard fridge for some free decor

It's hard to see with the lighting but my mom made the CUTEST dino decorations from outdoor lanterns marked down at Target.  The circular lantern was the body and she added dinosaur heads/tails/feet plus pics of Gideon as a baby.  The rest of the decorations were dollar store crate paper and balloons.

We ate ritz crackers, cheese, three kinds of berries, "dino eggs" (aka boiled eggs), and chicken nuggets

Here was the big cake we cut for everyone at the party.  It matched Gideon's little shirt :)  It was a triple white cake from Das Meyer's in Arvada (it's so good you would probably commit crimes and murder to have more of it)

Gideon's grandparents showed up a little early to give them their presents--he was a very happy boy and received some perfect gifts for his curious 1 year old mind.

We placed all other gifts and cards to the side to open after Gid's nap after the party.  This was a huge win for us  #1 Because I feel like it's mass chaos and wrangling of sugar-upped children at parties to stay away from the present opener #2  Gideon tends to shut down in huge crowds so a more controlled quiet environment would be a happier one for him (which it was post-nap)

Daddy and Gideon reading birthday cards!

Gid and Auntie Linny opening up more presents

A colorful tunnel?  A red bow?  Life is complete!  And JJ clearly wants that bow.

Those dimples on this birthday boy = everyone melting from his sweetness

This boy loves to explore textures, movement, animals, and figure out how anything works.  He adored everything he received

Rocking in his chair with a new book and his Grammy

He tired a bite of the cake but was kind enough to leave most of it for his mama, auntie and Grammy for leftovers-woo hoo!

Cousin Rilyn and Gid

Not pictured were the party activities.  After lunch and cake, we had a "dino egg hunt" which was just Easter eggs filled with small dino toys hidden all over the yard.  And pterodactyl rides which was swinging in blankets.  All simple and crowd pleasers for the littles.

We didn't go take home gifts because all the kids kept the dino toys in the eggs or went home filled with chicken nuggets and're welcome parents!

We are so thankful for everyone who came to celebrate and love our boy.  I would have this kind of party again and again.  It was a gift to us and I hope a blessing to our guests to celebrate 1 year of life for Gideon!

Happy Birthday you sweet boy!  I cannot wait to see what the next year has in store for you!

Gideon 12 Month /1 Year Update!!

1 & 2 months

3 & 4 months

5 & 6 months

7 & 8 months (coincidentally wearing the same shirt)

9 & 10 months

11 & 12 months

Age: 12 months old!  365 days! 1 whole year!

Gideon James, how are you a big 1 year old boy?  This mama is astounded and so thrilled for your life.  As of today, I am not sad about you getting older.  It hurts my heart to look at pictures of you as a tiny baby but only because you were SO precious and rolly.  How were you ever so tiny?  I love the human you are becoming, your heart, preferences, voice, interests, and uniqueness.  I cannot wait to see what another year of your life brings.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY my little love!

Weight: 23 lbs

Length: 30ish inches

Sizes (diapers, onesies):  Size 4 diapers, 12-18 month clothes.  No shoes still as he's not interested in walking

Eyes:  Blue (and if mischievous was a color they would be a vibrant shade of that!)

Hair: RED AND CURLY!!!  He has "angel wings" (as Auntie Linny calls them) right over his ears.  And in the back mounds of ringlets.  It looks like I put curlers in his hair ha!  I cannot even describe to you the amount of attention this child gets in public because of it.  From everyone, all ages.  Little girls pet his head, Grandpas declare they love a redheaded baby, middle aged men tell me about their random red-headed relative, Grandmas tell me how their hair used to be red, and other moms have been known to reach out and touch his hair.  It's insane!  And he doesn't mind ;)

Sleeping:  Gideon has ruined me for other children because he's such a frickin rockstar sleeper.  He goes to bed at 7:30 pm now, I dream feed him at 10:00 pm and he wakes up in the middle of the night to be rocked sa few times per week.  Most nights he sleep until about 5:30 am straight through the night.  I nurse him and he goes back to sleep until around 7:00 am.  He naps so well from 9:30-10:45 am and then again from 1:30-3:00 pm

He (like many children) does best with lots of good rest.  He sleeps in a cool, nearly pitch black room with Mr. Fluffernutter (his orange fox) and Blue Blue (his dog) as well as a soft blanket.

Eating: He has been steadily gaining traction with eating this the last month.  When we were in Texas he crushed solids and was in a huge growth spurt.  He will eat a lot one day and the next day is lighter.  He likes lots of water with his meals and has tried whole cows milk but isn't a fan.  He nurses about 5 times per day.

His favorite foods are hummus, avocado, salmon, bacon, sugar cookies, strawberries, peanut butter, and crackers.

Milestones:  He is holding on to everything with a ledge and making his way around different rooms.  He can turn pages of books independently and sit for several books being read at a time.  He likes peek-a-boo, shakes his head "no", waves bye-bye, says mama and laughs at "uh-oh"

Memorable outings:  We flew to California and Texas in the last month.  He rocked the flights and is a good traveler.  He learned to jet ski, drive a golf cart, and hot tub naked.

Favorite toys/activities:  Gideon LOVES anything that has a motor or looks like it is not for him.  His current loves include: the vacuum, floor fan, either one of our car & playing driver, the oven, toaster, blender, and washing machine.  He likes buttons and lights.

He also enjoys playing kitchen in a new mini kitchen his Grammy got him.  We read many books,  build forts, play farm animals & barn, build lego towers, color pictures, and splash with water.   If another kiddo is around that makes him happy and he enjoys times with cousins and friends.  Big crowds tend to make him withdraw but 1 or 2 friends is his happy place!

Words/sounds:  Mama is his main word that has meaning.  He makes a ton of sounds, babbles constantly, and is understanding more of our words but nothing else he says is really distinguishable.

Nicknames:   Lou Lee, Lou, Little Love, Giddy Con Queso (from daddy), Giddy Lou Who (from Aunt Linny), Giddy Puff (from Aunt Linny), Giddy Face (from Maggie), Giddy Pantz (from Maggie)
The usuals...Giddy Bear, Giddy Up, Gid, Giddy, Itty Giddy Titty Monster with the tiny hiney, G (from Uncle Clint), Mister, Man Cub

Funny moments: We were having dinner a few nights ago and I brought a spoonful of puree up to his mouth.  He sort of blew at it with his lips and sent it flying!  He absolutely BURST out laughing at himself in surprise and then kept rolling with laughter when he saw Ryan and I laughing too.  What a clown!

Looking forward to:  I said this last month but WALKING!!!  Please walk soon little one.  All his little friends walk so he would like to be able to keep up.  It also makes him endlessly frustrated to be at a fun place (park, zoo, museum, etc) and just crawl or get stepped on.  I don't want to carry his chunky body around anymore! I look forward to him speaking more words, seeing him explore the world around him, and watching the next year of his life unfold.

And the boy [Gideon] continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.

Fancied Up for A Wedding

Ryan's co-worker got married on Sunday in Morrison which is not only super close to our house but a really beautiful venue we had never been to before!

Several of the ladies Ryan works with were there so we pretty much passed Gideon off to them (they LOVE Gid!) and just saw him again when he wanted to eat!  It was a lot of fun to get dressed up and go out as a family.

This was our second and last wedding of the season and we were really blessed by the beautiful ceremony, good food, and all the friends we knew that showed up--it is SUCH a small world and we got to reconnect with familiar faces that we didn't even know would be there.

So smiley for all the pictures!

I love a good family shot where everyone is sort of-ish looking towards the camera

Brooke (the bride) had gold and sunflowers as her colors.  It was so classic and beautiful.

All the Fun Gid Has

One thing to know about Gideon is that he LOVES to laugh.  He has a giggle and a belly laugh like no other.  It's the sweetest thing and an attribute we love about him!

We have had to work to hear it a little more this last week as he is in ANOTHER growth spurt and I think his muscles/bones are achey slash he has been trying to pop in some new teeth for over a week.  Poor kid :(

So here are the activities filling our days to get this kid smiling and laughing like his usual self because it's hard to be a little growing guy...

Tickling this little one makes him just dissolve into giggles (left).  He also loves it when you build a tower of blocks but then keep him from knocking it over.  And he loves being rough housed by Ryan--non-stop laughs during that!  P.S.  THOSE CURLS!!!

Cousins eating grass together.  It's always fun to eat random fiber and dirty grass

We have been building forts almost daily out of couch cushions.  It keeps this peanut entertained through long afternoons and he thinks it is hilarious when you peek-a-boo him through an opening or grab him through the roof

This wasn't the MOST fun but he did visit the dentist last week.  He got to play dinosaurs and explore al the equipment which made him happy.  This child likes to "tinker" so it was his favorite to play with the suction machine, toothbrush, and little sink

iPad songs with Grammy and upside down time with mommy.  Also, un-pictured is Gideon's new favorite activity...sheet swinging!!  He loves being put in the middle of a sheet or quilt and being swung side to side.

If you can catch him by surprise then that is the absolute best laughs!  This is a tee-pee at my mom's house that he's just figuring out how to play in

Sweet smiley boy.  This child is a joy to us  We are constantly figuring out how to be patient, kind parents to him and adapt to his needs.  We have so much learning to do--1 year down, forever to go!

Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it

Summer is Flying By

Our summer has been pretty fast paced so far!  Gideon and I were sick the entire month of June then we were on 6 planes in 2 weeks traveling all over in July.  It's been fun to adventure with friends and family around Colorado soaking up the warm weather, outdoor activities, and community.

And now here we are in August with a lot of 1 year old birthday events happening!

It's been a good summer so far.  Tiring in a lot of ways and so fun in others as we get to do everything with Gid and see this bright season through his perspective.

Here are a few pics of our August life...

Gideon and the doodles.  He squeals whenever they walk into a room no matter how long it's been since he's seen them.  He and Poppy are still BFF's and Grumps just oversees their playtimes

Always reading at our house! Gid is a pro at turning pages and all our hard work to not rip the pages is paying off!

Have you ever seen such a sweet face?  This is how he wakes up every nap and it's the greatest gift

Earlier in the week we spent some time at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.  They have a really well designed kid's center full of exciting exhibits-water, bubbles, blocks, and tons of other random designs

He was obsessed with the tropical fish tank

The boys crawled everywhere and I just had to not think about how dirty the floor was haha

A storm was moving in over Denver which made for a beautiful view from the Museum entrance

Auntie Linny and cousin JJ came over for dinner this week so we played outside.  JJ ate his body weight in fresh green grass

I don't have the exact pic on my phone but Linny made us all a DELICIOUS Brazilian feast to celebrate the Olympics.  We watched a few different events and devoured the pork/bean stew, homemade salsa, and these little crack cheese muffins.  No real crack, but definitely addictive!

No one in our house is going back to school but I have a strong urge this time of year to walk around the back-to-school supply sections of the store and buy a fresh, new backpack.  That means fall is around the corner and I could not be more thrilled about pumpkin season, crock pot recipes, fall hikes, and cool weather!  Enjoy the last bit of summer--we will do the same :)

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
