Life Update

We've been up to a lot these last few days and weeks! Shall we give you a run-down?

1. We think we have found the church we will call home!! Hillside Community Church in Golden. Was it love at first sight? Yes indeedy. These people are truly seeking the face of God, the teaching is incredible, and the worship if phenomenal. Disclaimer: The church is (of course) run and attended by lots of dang sinners.... SO it is not going to be perfect and we don't want have expectations that it will be. But by God's Spirit and grace it will be a place where we love people, are filled up, and see His hand move over Golden. We dig it and we are pumped for Sundays!

2. I, (Carly speaking...did you even think it was Ryan? Does he ever blog? Getting side tracked...) was accepted for Campus Crusade staff yesterday afternoon. Long story short this ministry and job has been on my heart for awhile. Luckily the good people of Denver are SO flexible and amazing and let me not only turn my application in super late, but got back to me with a job offer in a record 4 days!!! That is amazing! So yes, I am raising my own support. Yes, I'll be doing college ministry. And yes, I am SUPER jazzed! This is the career that God has for me for as long as He sees fit. You can look up more at this website:

3. My dreamy husband is collecting poop water today to run tests for his sytem. My heart gets all giddy even at the thought of him elbow deep in sludgy brown stuff. Too much? His prototype for the bottle washing system is going SO well! He is on budget, on time, and loving his work. It is such a big sigh of relief that he loves his work and he comes home giddy every night. If there was ever a dream job for once-upon-a-time little boys who swoon over legos and building things, then Ryan Decker found it.

4. Anna, Stacey, Kristin and I have officially started the Beth Moore Bible Study "Jesus the One and Only". Every time I do a Beth Moore study I realize how much more there is to know about the Word than I could ever comprehend. It's a sweet time on Monday nights for the 4 of us plus we giggle and smooch all over Rilyn, so I officially declare that sweet baby is the highlight!

5. We have been able to see and love some of our most very favorite people the last few weeks and it has been good! We are filled up and loved well. Last night we went to the Melting Pot with the Meverdens and filled up on cheese, chocolate and good talks. And here are a few pics of a fun Saturday night we had with our friends Hannah & Daniel. We are digging community these days!

Our hearts are full this week! We will keep you updated as our adventures continue to play out...

A New Twist on Yoga...

Monday morning I find this ridiculous email in my inbox from Ryan who got it from his hilarious boss, Jon...I initially laughed out loud and then realized the disturbing reality that these OLD drunk guys reach the same flexibility in one night of a drinking rampage that some yogis try to attain for years!! Ha!

Research confirms that drinking gives you the same benefits as yoga does!!!

Position that brings the sensation of peace and calm.

Setu Bandha Sarvangasana

This position calms the brain and heals tired legs.

Excellent for back pain and insomnia.

Excellent for the shoulder area, thorax, legs, and arms.

Great exercise to stimulate the lumbar area, legs, and arms.

Ananda Balasana

This position is great for massaging the hip area.

This position, for ankles and back muscles.

Sebastián the Great

Ryan works with some dang cool people! Sebastián is one of the Directors down in Central America-he is a very feisty man who loves the Lord, his amazing family and has tons of experience with Healing Waters. Plus he is hilarious. We sat next to him at dinner and I don't think we ate any of our food because homie was busy too busy making us laugh!

He and the other directors flew in not too long ago and we partied it up in Denver at a Nuggets Game in a donated suite and at Abrusci's the next night for some incredible Italian dining. The point is we love this guy, especially because he took the time to send us this note and picture from his time here...

Save Water

He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

Amen, Pass the Burgers!

What is a loving and devoted husband to do when his wife is busy filling out a job application, with low and quickly descending iron levels, and a tendency to grumpiness at the faintest grumble of her stomach? You make some dee-lish-us burgers and fries that's what!! We are health fans around our hood and I think Ryan definitely rocked this meal...although I am 100% sure he would have rather been preparing this all on a grill instead of the ignoble frying pan.

Do you ever judge us for just posting pictures of food like it's our child or something?

{Their looks deceive them! That is 100% organic lean beef. Curses on all that grease.}

{Those, good people, are sweet potato fries. We should have made a double batch.}

Some day when we have a child or dog as cute as our niece (you're cuter than a dog Rilyn!) maybe we'll post pictures of them...or maybe not. They might be naughty and we'll just show you what we had for dinner instead :)

Mom's Birthday Celebration

A lot of the good people we love were birthed in March it seems! Ty, Stace, my mom and probably some other ones we forgot...oops! Here are a few pictures from this weekend with the Nelson clan. Lindsay and I made our mom a homemade Pink Lady Cake (recipe from which was an interesting adventure since our kitchen is practically from the stone age. Ryan and I choose not to have a microwave which makes softening butter somewhat difficult as you'll see a few pictures down. Linny is the bake master so she had to work with what we had, I think she is glad to be back to her domestic goddess hook-ups in Utah!

{How do YOU melt butter? You don't use a warm tea kettle? Odd.}

{And you don't fill a sink up with hot water when you need it to soften further?}

{The master mind behind this plan was in good spirits despite the lack of supplies}

{Ah, a delicious pink batter. My respect is heightened for Little House on the Prairie Days}

{Why yes, it DID taste just as good as it looks!}

{Check out the creeper in the background}

{One happy birthday momma}

{How nice, the Nelson parents!}

{Some homemade ribbons on mom's presents and Linny's fruit fly birthday card}

A great weekend! A fun birthday! And I forgot to mention that we had dinner at Salt up in Boulder off Pearl Street. It was incredible food-organic, locally harvested, sustainably grown. Try it out if you're up that way anytime soon! Enjoy this weather today!

What are we buying?!?!

The Lord hooked us up with two real swanky financial advisers: our good friend Ryan and his mentor and career coach Kim. Both of these men are A-to the-M-to the-AZING! They have set us up financially and we know all about emergency funds, simple IRA's, retiring at 65 and everything else in between. The best part? We never paid them a penny. Suckers! Just kidding. We love these guys so if you want to know how to meet them, e-mail us!

But that is most certainly not the point of this blog. It all comes down to my smooth talking husband...

We were in the midst of discussing just "how much house" we could afford right now. The conversation opened up to the types of properties we were interested in when my husband confidently chimes in, "Yeah I think we would like to buy our own condom someday..."

Oh Ryan John Decker there is never a dull moment with you. Ever.

Causes of Giddiness

I like to consider God to be a romantic. Not the "cheesy stuffed bear-holding cheap chocolates- tied to heart balloons-romantic"...Like the REAL deal! The One who created us, the lover of our souls, He knows the ways to pursue us. JC does it up right!! These surprises made the week extraordinary.

{My "just because" flowers that Ryan Decker gave me}

{A humble beginning to our scrumptious fritatta}

{Carrot Cake}

{An ongoing love affair with avocados}

{Ryan is into his cake, I'm just into his face}

{Hot Pink Sunrises}

{A feisty husband!}

Even at our most disgusting, cruel, horrific, embarrassing, doubtful, and dark moments God is not phased. He continues to pour out ahava (love). DANG He has quite a tolerance for us. But He is the one who made the ultimate sacrifice. I just accepted it. What a romance.

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness."

A Blast From Our Dating Past

I, Ryan Decker speaking, have a folder on my computer titled, "Carly." This folder is no ordinary folder. It's tapped full of all the things that Carly and I sent back and forth to each other during our friend-lationship, datingship, and engagement. For a few months straight, Carly and I would send each other cartoons that we personally made (using a free program online). They were an awesome way to let the other person know we were thinking about them and also a chance to be out of control. Last night, I found an old cartoon I made her probably 1.5 years ago. This was during a time when we thought (and still think) that rap name generators are one of the funniest things on earth. If you don't believe me, go check out You will understand more after reading the cartoon. Without further ado, a cartoon for Carly titled, "Boy Talk."

Pre-Cartoon Warning: There is a cuss word at the end of this cartoon, however, it's only a PG-13 bad word.

Chunky Orange Blobs of Goodness...

aka Sweet Potato Drop Biscuits
{Picture Source:}

Have I ever told you about one of our ALL TIME favorite vegetables? No? Well, it is in fact the humble sweet potato. The Vitamin C, B and phosphorus in them will help your immune system, the magnesium helps with digestion and they are good for cardiac health and keeping your arteries elastic. Besides that they taste amazing and are such a gorgeous shade of orange! Our favorite way in the whole world to eat them is as a Sweet Potato Drop Biscuit. Oh sweet baby Jesus they are AMAZING! We've never had a dinner guest not eat at least 10 of these golf ball sized biscuits and I've learned to make double or triple batches. That should be proof enough!

So we encourage you to make these to go with chili, to pack as a high energy snack, or as a surprisingly healthy breakfast and you could even compliment it with a smoothie. Enjoy!

  • 1 cup mashed cooked sweet potatoes (2 small baked sweet potatoes)
  • 3 Tbs. vegetable oil (We use olive oil and that works fine too)
  • 1 Tbs. honey
  • 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (We use Bob's Red Mill Rice Flour for fluffier, spongier biscuits)
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg (or you can substitute with cinnamon if you don't have nutmeg)

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Coat baking sheet with cooking spray

2. Combine sweet potatoes, oil, syrup, vinegar, and salt in large bowl. Sift in flour, baking powder, and nutmeg.

3. Cut dry ingredients into sweet potato mixture with fork until mixture comes together. Stir in 2 to 3 Tbs. water, or enough to get dough to hold together.

4. Drop golf ball–size rounds of dough onto prepared baking sheet. Bake 15 to 17 minutes, or until tops are lightly browned and firm to the touch. Serve warm.

Let us know if you are a fan. These are SO simple to make and you will have people asking you for the recipe every single time.

Tae Bo with Ryan & Billy Blanks

What you have just witnessed is the magnificent specimen of Ryan J Decker III practicing Tae Bo with one of Billy Blanks' intense work out videos. It is actually quite impossible for me to work out with him when we do these videos because I laugh so hard and can't do the moves. So instead I get out Flip Video out and bless you fine viewers with this footage. Oh baby baby how he rocks those kicks and punches!!

The Pleasantness of the Everyday

See this handsome stud right here? I'm all about him. He is the swooniest husband I know. This is a little snapshot of the wedding we went to last weekend in Ft. Morgan for a friend of mine from college. Our weekends (and weeks) seem to be so busy lately but I'm grateful for this daily bustle because that means we are in America with a good chunk of the people we love.

These dreary February/March weeks really aren't anything for the record books but they have been filled with joy, abundance of learning, and time with all ya'alls that we dig!!

Top Nine Goodies from the past 40 (ish) Days:
{Drum Rolllll.....}
1. Ryan teaching his stubborn wife stick shift yesterday
2. Loving on that chunky yummy new niece of ours!
3. Adventuring to the eastern Colorado boonies for wedding bells!
4. Crashing by 9:00 in the pea-em every Friday night
5. Chatting with a Realtor to start browsing homes we might call our own
6. Family times and Y-lo's homemade Reese's
7. Snowshoeing in those Rocky Mountains
8. Some fights, some communication and always perseverance
9. Adopting Martin Luther the South African plant

Happy Monday!

Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
Habakkuk 3:18

Spring has {nearly} Sprung!

It must be March because I can feel SPRING just around the corner. Oh spring how I love thee! I am trying to fill our apartment with everything green and colorful these days to encourage this sweet season to get here! The days of early morning coffee on the back porch, evening bike rides, and lots of fresh seasonal vegetables is on the horizon!

Unfortunately the cloak of night covers these pictures because I just couldn't contain my excitement to snap some pics of these beauties!

{Oh lawdy check out those colors!}

{Our new plant friend who originated in South Africa. We named him Martin Luther.}

{Ah, Mandella the Fern. He's a stunner, no?}

Not the greatest quality but we turned what used to be an dreary gray window into a vibrant yellow chalkboard. It normally does not have flowers on it...the man of the house probably wouldn't appreciate such fancy shinanigans! Yet my little heart does pine for real flowers and splashes of yellow in the great outdoors! For now I will settle for cozy house plants and colorful carrot soup to get me through the last sleepy days of winter.

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. ~Nadine Stair

Wilson's Fence

Ryan Decker has an uncanny ability to come up with ridiculously sweet potential band names inspired by major motion pictures or various bands. Here are a few of his grandest ideas with the included inspirations:

Wilson's Fence
(inspired by Home Improvement)

Schmee is Me
(inpsired by Hook)

Steven Tyler's Lips
(inspired by Aerosmith)

The Peffercorns
(inspired by The Sandlot)

Ryan is surely a talented man.
How could a band with a name like Wilson's Fence not play to a sold out crowd?

Yoga Complexities

Yoga and I are starting to get a complicated relationship. I absolutely adore yoga. But a lot of people definitely do not share my feelings.

I get kind of bummed out when I google for a yoga podcast or video and about every other hit is something like "Yoga is Satan's Work" or "Yoga and Christianity Aren't Compatible BAH!

That is nonsense in my opinion and anything can be redeemed for the Lord. Yoga literally translates to mean "union". In my case, union with God, union with the way He made our bodies to move, and even union with Him in meditation and prayer during the practice of yoga.

I get the fine line that people are talking about. Yoga's roots are in Hinduism and their stance is that everything is God so they are being encouraged to be unified or to connect with an impersonal spiritual substance. It's certainly not a Christian's goal in practicing a form of yoga to get mixed up in anything spiritually harmful or profane. Here's the main deal though: Postures, poses, and meditation are given meaning when we allow it. There does not have to be anything blasphemous about yoga. God is a radical, and into health (he did make out bodies after all!) and I think he would dig it that we are getting stretched, toned and healthy but with mindfulness to how and why we do it.

Just my opinion. The line can be dangerous. I'm not convinced AT ALL that Christians can't practice yoga. In fact I think that the exact opposite is true. We are called to be light in the dark places of the world. Praying a beam of light can be shed into the wonderful wellness and even spiritual healthfulness that yoga brings.

You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into
2 Samuel 22:29
